«But his heart was in a constant, turbulent riot.» ¹

No matter who we become; no matter in what place we are; no matter the grand parties we throw; no matter the people from whom we surround ourselves. Nothing matters if the only thing we desire, the love that we always have loved, is not at the distance of what we achieve.

| If there were still doubts...

I am a confessed admirer of few things, but as I say, «if it is to enjoy it, I enjoy it seriously». This has applicability in lots of subjects in my life, but today I wanted to tell you about something very particular.

If my friends C. and M. wrote on this blog, they would tell you of the long hours they would wait for me on Tuesday evenings of a few years ago. If my friend J. came here, he would tell you how he cut my face from a photograph, and glued it to the TV screen on one of those Tuesdays, so just I could flesh out the main character of the series I watched copiously.

The series was on on one of our private channels on Tuesdays around 11p.m.. Nor the best party, neither the best bar in town, convinced me to leave home earlier. Everyone knew that R. would just show up around 11.45p.m., and within time, no one would wonder about a delay, that was no longer a holdup, when everyone assumed and understood that that was my bit: I sat on the old couch in my exiguous apartment in the busiest avenue in that city, rolled over myself, waiting to listen to the first chords of the generic song.

Then I’d fix my eyes on the screen -- nothing would move them from those inches -- and I would laugh, dream, think, reflect, love, covet and sometimes weep. I do not know if my life became one long episode of the series by coincidence, or if by the exalted comparison, I tried to take it to the simile.

I consumed devoutly all 94 episodes from the 6 seasons, as they were on TV. But I soon brought it home, and collected the legacy that entertained me for so long. Maybe you’ll think I’m exaggerating when I say that there are dialogues that I know by heart, there are scenes that I could masterly represent and that my bachelorette party was under the motto of the series. Those who know me well know that I vibrate with the concept.

And it is with equal glee that I (re)watch the humor and the fabulosity on the most glamorous streets of NYC, currently on scene -- by dinner hour – on one of these paid channels of series and popcorn. Physically I may even be in my kitchen, behind the pots, disheveled and wrapped in apron; however, during those two half-hours, I'm with Bradshaw and her friends, at the most fashionable streets of Manhattan, sipping a Cosmopolitan.

Because life is not always an attractive and sophisticated way, and at the end, every girl wants to find her own Mr. Big.

O teu inebriante abraço | Your enthralling embrace

I know you’d like me to be more like you. I know that you yearn for me to visit you and gossip about my day. I know it hurts you when I dwell in silence, without being able to tell you about my life. I know its scares you that I became a very different woman from what you taught me to be. I know you long to hear me asking you to cook some meat or fish for me. But I also know that you know that these things will not happen, that you have given up hope, and that you now live in good fellowship with my style, so different from yours. When I was younger I would ask you to get some friends, to go out more often; I wouldn’t like you to undervalue yourself in favour of your family. I needed space to grow up; I didn’t want to be asphyxiated in your embrace. I used to tell my friends that you were a chicken mom, and they retorted that theirs also were it. But when they knew you, they’d say you really were the biggest chicken mom on Earth. On high school all my friends knew you, and whenever I meet them on the street nowadays, they still remember your affection. I always laughed about this, even when I’d accuse you of being the dullest mom on Earth. I still do, and you smile, because you know it’s true. The funniest fact is that, if one day I become a mother, I have no pretensions but to be just like you.

Um balão. Um suspiro. Uma esperança. | A baloon. A sigh. A hope.

If you hadn’t died, tomorrow would the first Mother's Day for me to live the true meaning of it, the true meaning of the expression and the date. It would be wonderful continuing to feel two hearts beating inside of me: one in my chest, another one faster in my womb. But you drifted away. And soon after left someone else, from whom I don’t even know the gender. To mark the date, some mothers with the empty lap will meet tomorrow to launch balloons in the sky, depositing hope on the infinite, giving notice that they haven’t forgotten the ones who left too soon. I haven’t forgotten you. I’ll never forget. The tears that fall when no one’ s seeing feed my memory of you. If you hadn’t died, I was unaware of this event and ignored the pain of these mothers. But now I cry it every day. Forgive me, but tomorrow I won’t launch balloons. Putting them in the air would materialize your departure, and I still have hope that one day I’m going to wake up and realize that you're still in me, alive, that doctors hadn’t given up trying to save you. Maybe this is just a nightmare, and I don’t want to throw balloons into the air. I don’t want to let you go away.

Carta aos meus 15 anos | Letter to my 15 years-old

Goza-as.

As coisas não vão correr logo bem nesta matéria, e vais culpar-te. Tenta erguer-te do melhor modo possível.

Usufrui-a.

* Da R. mais crescida.

Hi, 15 year-old R.

I wanted to write to you, above all because I miss you. You don’t know me, and if you’ve met me on the street, you wouldn’t even identify yourself. Besides the curly hair and the bad temper, I don’t keep much from you. Not because I don’t respect you; but because I’m not built of the substance of dreams that carries you on.

Stay safe in the school to where you’ve just transferred. The other students won’t immediately be nice to you, because you come from a city that they don’t even want to talk about. Don’t worry if you have to be alone during the breaks of the first term. Your colleagues will be watching you, and one day one of them will invite you to join his group. Within no time you’ll be friends with lots of beautiful people, and you’ll be invited to their parties. Within two years you will be vice president of the Students Association, and you’ll become an important pawn in boosting the students in the school context. You'll always be proud of that.

You'll start being interested in grunge guys, with longer and more careful hair than yours. There is no harm in that. At that age everything is permitted, and some of these people are not really as sluggish as they seem.

Are you familiar to P., that guy you met on that bar where you like to go on Friday nights? He’s going to become your best friend. Not now, but within 5 years you won’t give a step in your life without asking for his opinion. You'll build a complicity with him that only few people have the chance to know. You'll have the cooler and more hallucinatory moments with him. You'll call him occasionally at dawn for him to go offer his shoulder for you to cry. You’re gonna ask him for advice about guys, and you'll always discuss with him because he doesn’t give you the answers you really want to hear. The same will happen in reverse. Between detective games and lots of conversations about serious issues -- or others not so much -- you’ll be happy together, without major mutual demands.

Unfortunately this will not last forever and an aneurysm in the best chapter of P. will take the better over his life and your friendship. You won’t know how to deal with it. But do not worry: he’s going to leave you with someone, and you will start believing that somewhere he continues preserving your happiness. What am I talking about? About a cute green-eyed boy he’ll introduce you. This guy is not gonna show you much interest initially, and it won’t be before the second year after P.’s death that you two will meet and fall in love. Later he will ask you to marry him.

Don’t you believe it? I know that you don’t picture yourself as an obedient to social canons, but you’re going to get married. People won’t believe when you announce it to them, and some will want to be on your wedding just to check with their own eyes something in which none of them believed. But easy: things are not really that straightforward. Before that, there will be a time when you’re going to be back to back to love. But don’t worry: as your mother always said, what is to thee shall come to you naturally.

You'll go to the college you want. Two years later you’ll see yourself forced to change to another university in a more developed city, just so you can get a job to continue your studies. You'll thrill you with the money at the end of the month and the course will be relegated to the background. You’ll be confused for a while and you’ll question all your decisions. You’ll soon learn that only the fittest survive in the working world. You won’t survive the first time, but you’ll gain strength to face other obstacles. Even if you don’t understand it immediately, all the less good times will be part of good life lessons. Enjoy them.

I know that nowadays you proclaim to everyone that you were born to be an aunt and that you don’t see yourself as a mother. The prophecy will be fulfilled: your niece will be born and you will love her enormously. But someday you'll wish she had been born through your inward. You’ll decide you're ready, and you want to be a mother after all. Things won’t be very good on this matter and you’ll blame yourself. Try to raise yourself the best way possible. I hope you do a better job in this area than I did. I wish I could say more, but notice: even older, I still don’t know nothing about it.

Don’t hold on to the little problems that steal your smile. There is nothing better than your adolescence. Enjoy it.

Ontem | Yesterday

Houve quem chorasse. Houve quem tentou animar-me. Houve quem quis devolver-me a esperança.

Afteryesterday’s disclosure, there are only a few words that made me come here today. Some said it was gutsy. Some said it was daring. Some were moved at that. Some cried. Some tried to cheer me up. Some tried to give me back hope. Some identified to it. Some said they were not expecting that to happen with them. Some stated it on the commentaries form and some e-mailed me. If my words and my exposure served to sensitize the subject to someone else, then they were worth it. If my aphorisms and my manifestation help someone in the future [or even yourselves], then it was worth it using this powerful means of communication to talk about a subject without taboos; a subject that many apparently try to silence -- because no one likes to talk about serious things. Because when I needed it, there was no one really prepared to listen to me, to comfort me. Don’t make a fool of yourselves thinking that the way I expressed it was raw and brutal. This is it: the way all women who have had lives ripped away from their womb feel. The speech, the wish to die, the despair and the hope in decline are traits that cut across all of us. And creeds, beliefs, races or colours don’t matter at all. A stolen hope hurts our heart in similar ways.

Thank you for being on that side and not giving up reading this.

Olá!, eu sou a R. e já sofri duas perdas gestacionais | Hi!, I’m R., and I’ve had two miscarriages

Agora as pessoas devolvem-me o gesto e dizem que És grande e misericordioso. Treta do pior!

A vida nunca me deu nada de mão beijada. Essas… essas nunca Te irei perdoar.

At exactly this time, it has been two months since I was admitted in a hospital that was still encrusted in my memory, skin and bones. A hospital where I had left torn apart and split in two only 72 days before, after waking up from an identical situation that brought me there that day. The pain was already familiar. The willingness to die too.
God, if You’re listening to my thoughts or reading this blog, I want You to know that I no longer believe in You. Believe that I’ve always respected You, and that I always tried to regulate my conduct in accordance with the principles pronounced by Thy doctrine. I was always Your fan and a staunch defender, against everything and everyone. Sometimes people would show some lack of faith, and I always had a word of comfort in Thy defense. Now people return me that gesture, saying You’re great and merciful. To me this is just a costume idea. Bulshit! Now I know that we're all "down here" alone, left to our own luck and to an uncertain fate. You’ve hurt me. I don’t want to know anything about loving You. I do not want to know Thy catechism. I no longer believe in this great love that everyone says You have for us. I wanted to have the comfort net and confidence that always believed I had.

If it is true that You put us face to face with these misfortunes to put us to the test, I have to admit I failed miserably. I have an exposed open wound, where anger, substance, impatience for Your creation and total disrespect for the course you have chosen for me are accumulating. I wanted to be thanking Thee, instead of thinking with the contempt about what life has reserved for me. If Your problem is with me, why the hell did you stole the life to the little girl who was living in my belly for a few months? If you wanted to measure my faith, why did You turn the second life I’d generated in my womb into a sea of blood? How many lives have You stolen from the womb of other women? How many lives have You pushed into the womb of others? Will it always be like this? Are You going to keep stealing the children of women who desire them, and offering a countless number of children to the ones that don’t want them? I know that if I ever become pregnant again I won’t even be allowed to move an arm, to stretch a leg or contracting my abdomen. I know I'll always be at risk. I know that the life of a child in my womb will always be hanging by a thread. But in the meantime I'll hear about women who throw themselves down stairs to lose the fruit of their womb, and yet keep them; I'll know more and more cases of women who sell their children to overcome the crisis; I’ll know that there is a countless women who doesn’t deprive themselves of anything, not even somersaulting by the 5th month of pregnancy and giving birth to healthy children. Is this the so-called divine justice? Are these the same conditions that you offer to everyone? Is this the unconditional love that You offer to all elements of your creation?

Life has never given me anything for granted. Studies, work, money at the end of the month… it was all built with blood and sweat, having to push myself twice as many others. I never resigned and I’ve always been grateful about You to teaching me how to give more value to what I’ve conquered. But the lives You didn’t keep in my womb? Those… those I’ll never forgive You.

O dia em que ele se afastou | The day he drifted away.

5 years ago, on this same day, I slept -- partially on the floor, partially on a cold bench -- at Schiphol airport, in Amsterdam. Curiously I had left behind a hotel room in Utrecht: comfortable, previously booked, previously paid, with fresh sheets and comfy blankets. And despite having my return on next day’s agenda, even having the plane ticket paid, I’ve slept at the airport to convince TAP that I really needed a place in a flight on that morning, that I didn’t care about the later flight, nor the ticket money they would not reimburse me. I had to come back. I wanted to be where I belonged, together with the ones that wanted me. A bad night’s sleep, 8 hours under a huge cold and €600,00 later, the largest airline company in Portugal was convinced that my tears were real, and it was willing to put me on Portuguese soil as soon as possible. A hostess came near me, caressed my shoulder to wake me up, and said: «it’s time for you to go». And I came. I’ve left behind the friends with whom I’ve traveled, and I’ve done this journey alone. Maybe the word had been spread, because only this justifies the contagious friendliness with which I was offered by the whole crew. Without requesting it, they gave me a pillow and a blanket. «You look tired», they said. And I was hardly waiting to get home. Five hours later I was hugging my family. I was hugging all the relatives I love, except one. He was in and open casket, with a postponed funeral, waiting for my return, waiting for me to kiss him for the last time. I arrived, hugged him, kiss him on his forehead, said «thank you», cleaned his face with my tears and I covered him with a kind of a white veil. The coffin was closed. His body stayed beneath earth; but his image, his teachings, his unconditional love, his kindness, his words of comfort, his strong hands, his impeccably clean nails, his continuously fragrant cheeks, his clothes perfectly cleaned and without creases and the memories of almost three decades of frequently coexistence, those... those cannot be taken away from me. If Heaven really exists, I have no doubts that you’re there, Grandpa, and that inspires me to be a better person, for me to find later a timeless place next to you.

Certezas e orgasmos | Certainties and orgasms

A few years ago, in this literature pearl that Maria¹ is (“Your best friend”, they say), I read the answer to the question posed by a young girl, not caste, but innocent: she was telling about an episode between her and her boyfriend, said she felt a kind of shakiness when they were playing doctors with each other, and was wondering if what she felt was an orgasm. The psychologist of the magazine, the pinnacle of wisdom, science and education, answered with simplicity: «you’ll know when you have an orgasm; you won’t have doubts at all».

Today I found myself remembering this piece of reading I appreciate so much, and I thought «how simple it would be if everything in life was like this». Because I have been marveling with doubt:

When do we know that something has already given you what it had to give?

Eu ou um velho apeadeiro | Me or an old halt

As roupas velhas tresandavam a mofo.

Infelizes as gerações vindouras…

Sentei-me.

Então levantei-me e caminhei em direcção a casa.

Today I woke up with an overwhelming sense of powerlessness. There are days like this! The odors, the colors, the textures, the flavors… Everything seemed so rooted, so impossible of being transformed. I didn’t even bother to fight against the improbable. I went out!

The shaggy hair fell awkwardly on my shoulders. The old clothes stank of mold. The worn shoes were not offered any friction by the paving stones. Step by step, driven by the instinct, I went straight to the answers of my questions. I cannot claim to have found them, but when I noticed that old train station, loosing status to a simple halt, a strange strength impelled me to discover its inner.

Inside I say old people waiting for the end of his days. Seated, they talk about everything and about nothing at all. They laugh with a carefree attitude, because they already live with disrepute on tomorrows. They don’t believe anymore that a better day will come! I managed to see beyond what I was allowed to see. Each wrinkle made me guess the weight of the world loaded beyond their look. I did not that I avoid one or two tears from falling.

I left that ugly, dark space, impregnated with the smell of urine, to come discover the shabby rails. The wooden benches were old and unsafe. Even so I did not hesitate to occupy the one that was empty. Before sitting down, I scraped a match on the wall until it burned down in yellow-fire. This was a slow act. I only understood why then: the walls were covered with tiles depicting ancient costumes. For a while I wished I had lived in the days of yesterday. Those of today are too ungrateful. Unfortunate are the future generations…

I lit a cigarette, looked around, and stopped to stare a couple of teenagers who was secretly dating behind a rusty and abandoned chariot. I did not stop an accomplice laughter leaving my lips towards their ears. They became aware of the presence of unfamiliar looks and ran hand in hand.

I sat. It didn’t take long to appear an old train carrying old people. I stood there all day. I saw the train carrying that same carriage numerous times. The train travelled the same path during lots of hours, as if it could not change his route.

Then I got up and walked towards home. I may have found possible answers:

* The old people personify my ego on those days when I just want to disappear, on the days when even breathing is a heavy exercise, the days I scream I do not wish to live anymore.

* The tiles paint the urge need that floods me more times than I would want to, to go back and live in the past; it is the most unconscious desire to return to my childhood, when everything was as simple as two plus two equals four.

* The couple in love is a picture of my inner self on those days when I find myself in an unspeakable ecstasy. It is me with a huge desire to turn my days around and live the life of the ones that smile.

* The train was the picture that got me out of a state of inertia: that carriage is me, insisting on treading the same paths, disillusioning myself when I don’t find something new. But this carriage can still decide to change the route!

I understand now: I have to get rid of the strings that hold my search for the lost smile. I have to follow a different road from the one I step on…

O fim de uma era | The end of an era

Hoje acordei assustada. Agora sinto-me meia perdida.

I woke up frightened today. Maybe this is the end of a cycle, but I'm not prepared to it. It’s true that it will be good not having to wake up early on a Saturday, not having to plan lessons during the week, but above being another means of budgetary support, this was an escape from my serious and dull job that I have between Monday and Friday. During 5 days a week I work l-i-t-e-r-a-l-l-y to earn money. I do it without pleasure, even if I invest all my professional pride (because if I have to do it, I do it well). But it’s boring… This sixth day didn’t sound like work. I enjoyed myself with the kids, I did what I really like to do and to what I’ve studied a life time, and that’s teaching. Now I feel kind of lost. Maybe this is the so called crisis knocking on my door. But what worries me the most is not loosing this extra income; it is loosing the pleasure I still have the pleasure to associate with the word “work”.
