Agenda para o dia | Agenda for the day

Note to self: usar calçado confortável.

12h09: Pôr a comida na mesa e sentar-me.

8.00 a.m.: Try not to give up to the cyclic behavior of chronobiology, and continue in bed just a little longer.

8.15 a.m.: Appeal to the complacency of Sebastião and Rafa -- who have realized that I'm already awake –- in order to avoid their wonderful and cute noses laid beside me, convincing me to get up.

8.23 a.m.: Giving in to the dog’s whims, and put my feet out of bed immediately.

8.37 a.m.: After washing my face, go to the kitchen to prepare a good breakfast and enjoy it under the sun. St. Peter, be a buddy, yes?

9:19 a.m.: Turn on the computer and check out what’s going on in the blogosphere.

10.03 a.m.: Bathe, moisturize the skin, detangle, moisturize the hair, dry the hair, moisturize the face, spread a good primer, camouflage the dark circles around the eyes, cover with BB Cream and compact powder, try to make a perfect eyeliner, comb the eyebrows, and put on some intense black mask on the eyelashes.

10.59 a.m.: Pick the clothing for the day. Note to self: wear comfortable shoes.

11.14 a.m.: Start peeling the potatoes. How many will be needed for 7 adults and 1 child?

11.30 a.m.: Put the potatoes into the electric fryer, and start cooking rice.

11.47 a.m.: Yell Call J., tell him that he should have already set the table, try not to get angry when he tells to calm down, and ask for him to go buy chicken barbecue for the guests.

12.05 p.m.: Receive the guests and get them seated.

12.09 p.m.: Bring the food to the table and sit down.

12.10 p.m.: Remember I’ve not cooked for myself, hasten to the fridge, unpack two slices of tofu that were being tempered since yesterday, and put them on the grill.

12.13 p.m.: Opening the doors for the guests not to complain about the smoke from the grill.

12.21 p.m.: Sit down and finally eat the tofu with the rice and potatoes that have cooled meanwhile.

13.02 p.m.: Say goodbye to the 3 guests that are going to depart before the others. Give a big kiss to my niece and ask her to behave well.

13.07 p.m.: Pick up the dishes.

13.11 p.m.: Put the dirty dishes in the wash machine.

13.17 p.m.: Split the leftover bones into two equal parts, mix them in with feed, put them on the floor and avoid a diplomatic incident between the dogs from the house.

13.31 p.m.: Sit a little, while guests drink coffee.

14.06 p.m.: Put everyone in the car and head to Espinho.

14.43 p.m.: Curse the city, because one can never find a good spot to park.

14.57 p.m.: Go to the place of the fashion show and find a comfortable place to sit.

15.19 p.m.: Get up, stretch the legs, ask J. if he has everything prepared, start getting anxious.

15.39 p.m.: Look at the clock and wish that time flies.

16:11 p.m.: Curse the fact that in Portugal nothing ever starts at the scheduled time.

16.28 p.m.: Spot my niece on the catwalk, get up, clap enthusiastically, whistle in delight, and realize everyone around is looking at me.

16.29 p.m.: Continue clapping -- as if there was no tomorrow -- to that girly-girl of four years-old, who makes me proud of her professionalism at the catwalk.

17.01 p.m.: Realize that everything went very fast.

17.04 p.m.: Hasten to the backstage to give a huge hug to the hottest chick I know, grope her ass, ask her who's the most beautiful girl in the world, hear her say "I am" and reply “no, I am”.

17.14 p.m.: Convince the family to go eat something on the beachfront.

17.22 p.m.: Dang my idea of going so close to the sea, try walking getting a glimpse through the curls which flew with the wind up in front of my eyes, enter a quiet place and get pleased about the temperature in the inside.

17.49 p.m.: Understand the holiday is coming to an end and return home.

18:36 p.m.: Change clothes, put on my sneakers, put the leash in Sebastião and Rafa, connect the iPod and go for a walk.

18.54 p.m.: Try not to venture through unknown paths and realize too late that I'm far from home.

19.29 p.m.: Try not to complain about the feet.

19.33 p.m.: Arrive at home, and bless the moment I get barefoot. Enjoy a few minutes of “nothing”.

20.11 p.m.: Ask J. if he wants to have dinner, leading him to conclude to only eat some soup.

20.30 p.m.: Have dinner and eat some fruit.

21.09 p.m.: Sit on the couch a little and start to despair because tomorrow I’ll face a Thursday with the taste and the smell of a Monday.

21.22 p.m.: Visit the blogosphere.

22.48 p.m.: Go upstairs to the room and sleep. Try not to forget to turn on the alarm, which was inactive tonight.

Carta aos meus 15 anos | Letter to my 15 years-old

Goza-as.

As coisas não vão correr logo bem nesta matéria, e vais culpar-te. Tenta erguer-te do melhor modo possível.

Usufrui-a.

* Da R. mais crescida.

Hi, 15 year-old R.

I wanted to write to you, above all because I miss you. You don’t know me, and if you’ve met me on the street, you wouldn’t even identify yourself. Besides the curly hair and the bad temper, I don’t keep much from you. Not because I don’t respect you; but because I’m not built of the substance of dreams that carries you on.

Stay safe in the school to where you’ve just transferred. The other students won’t immediately be nice to you, because you come from a city that they don’t even want to talk about. Don’t worry if you have to be alone during the breaks of the first term. Your colleagues will be watching you, and one day one of them will invite you to join his group. Within no time you’ll be friends with lots of beautiful people, and you’ll be invited to their parties. Within two years you will be vice president of the Students Association, and you’ll become an important pawn in boosting the students in the school context. You'll always be proud of that.

You'll start being interested in grunge guys, with longer and more careful hair than yours. There is no harm in that. At that age everything is permitted, and some of these people are not really as sluggish as they seem.

Are you familiar to P., that guy you met on that bar where you like to go on Friday nights? He’s going to become your best friend. Not now, but within 5 years you won’t give a step in your life without asking for his opinion. You'll build a complicity with him that only few people have the chance to know. You'll have the cooler and more hallucinatory moments with him. You'll call him occasionally at dawn for him to go offer his shoulder for you to cry. You’re gonna ask him for advice about guys, and you'll always discuss with him because he doesn’t give you the answers you really want to hear. The same will happen in reverse. Between detective games and lots of conversations about serious issues -- or others not so much -- you’ll be happy together, without major mutual demands.

Unfortunately this will not last forever and an aneurysm in the best chapter of P. will take the better over his life and your friendship. You won’t know how to deal with it. But do not worry: he’s going to leave you with someone, and you will start believing that somewhere he continues preserving your happiness. What am I talking about? About a cute green-eyed boy he’ll introduce you. This guy is not gonna show you much interest initially, and it won’t be before the second year after P.’s death that you two will meet and fall in love. Later he will ask you to marry him.

Don’t you believe it? I know that you don’t picture yourself as an obedient to social canons, but you’re going to get married. People won’t believe when you announce it to them, and some will want to be on your wedding just to check with their own eyes something in which none of them believed. But easy: things are not really that straightforward. Before that, there will be a time when you’re going to be back to back to love. But don’t worry: as your mother always said, what is to thee shall come to you naturally.

You'll go to the college you want. Two years later you’ll see yourself forced to change to another university in a more developed city, just so you can get a job to continue your studies. You'll thrill you with the money at the end of the month and the course will be relegated to the background. You’ll be confused for a while and you’ll question all your decisions. You’ll soon learn that only the fittest survive in the working world. You won’t survive the first time, but you’ll gain strength to face other obstacles. Even if you don’t understand it immediately, all the less good times will be part of good life lessons. Enjoy them.

I know that nowadays you proclaim to everyone that you were born to be an aunt and that you don’t see yourself as a mother. The prophecy will be fulfilled: your niece will be born and you will love her enormously. But someday you'll wish she had been born through your inward. You’ll decide you're ready, and you want to be a mother after all. Things won’t be very good on this matter and you’ll blame yourself. Try to raise yourself the best way possible. I hope you do a better job in this area than I did. I wish I could say more, but notice: even older, I still don’t know nothing about it.

Don’t hold on to the little problems that steal your smile. There is nothing better than your adolescence. Enjoy it.

A eles sorri e questionei "passou bem?".

I left breathless that day. I hurried down the stairs, ran into a neighbor who I cannot describe and I let out a “good morning, how are you”. I didn’t mind with the absence of his feedback! I knew I was going to face a busy day on the other side of the door of the building, and I could not halt myself.

While walking down the street and looked at my reflection in the shop windows (to check if I’d dressed something inside out), I stumbled on many familiar faces. I smiled at them and questioned “how are you?”. The more sidetracked specimens responded with mechanical gestures. Maybe they haven’t even noticed me.

Other acquaintances, less distracted, returned the question to me with proper direction, but I actually did not offer them any answer.

When I started thinking that on that morning I hadn’t open myself to the world, or received a signal of its opening to me, something made me wake up in greater clarity. Almost arriving to work, I saw Ana and I held me for a few seconds in the weighting of my social obligations and I chose to wait to tell her “hi”.

As soon as she noticed my presence, she tore her smile and quickened her pace. As we greeted each other, I let out a natural "are you ok?", when almost simultaneously I received the question "how are you? '. In hasty and run over sentences I told her about the project in which I was wrapped and how I was fulfilled, even if tired.

With a supportive smiling, Ana petted my spirits with some words of strength and told me about herself. Among reports and brief stories of her personal and professional successes, I realized in her exultation how crystal clear her aura was.

I did not spend more than 10 minutes of my precious time and I finished that delightful encounter with an enviably envious smiling sigh. I was happy for my friend! But most of all, I was surprised by the rejuvenating nature of that exchange of words.

When I sat at my desk to start organizing the job for that day, nothing sounded boring or tedious to me! It was then when I was assaulted by a concrete question of my subconscious:

At what point of our lives are we forced to turn to our belly, believing that there is never time to indulge our affections, rather than really wanting an answer when we greet someone?

Eu ou um velho apeadeiro | Me or an old halt

As roupas velhas tresandavam a mofo.

Infelizes as gerações vindouras…

Sentei-me.

Então levantei-me e caminhei em direcção a casa.

Today I woke up with an overwhelming sense of powerlessness. There are days like this! The odors, the colors, the textures, the flavors… Everything seemed so rooted, so impossible of being transformed. I didn’t even bother to fight against the improbable. I went out!

The shaggy hair fell awkwardly on my shoulders. The old clothes stank of mold. The worn shoes were not offered any friction by the paving stones. Step by step, driven by the instinct, I went straight to the answers of my questions. I cannot claim to have found them, but when I noticed that old train station, loosing status to a simple halt, a strange strength impelled me to discover its inner.

Inside I say old people waiting for the end of his days. Seated, they talk about everything and about nothing at all. They laugh with a carefree attitude, because they already live with disrepute on tomorrows. They don’t believe anymore that a better day will come! I managed to see beyond what I was allowed to see. Each wrinkle made me guess the weight of the world loaded beyond their look. I did not that I avoid one or two tears from falling.

I left that ugly, dark space, impregnated with the smell of urine, to come discover the shabby rails. The wooden benches were old and unsafe. Even so I did not hesitate to occupy the one that was empty. Before sitting down, I scraped a match on the wall until it burned down in yellow-fire. This was a slow act. I only understood why then: the walls were covered with tiles depicting ancient costumes. For a while I wished I had lived in the days of yesterday. Those of today are too ungrateful. Unfortunate are the future generations…

I lit a cigarette, looked around, and stopped to stare a couple of teenagers who was secretly dating behind a rusty and abandoned chariot. I did not stop an accomplice laughter leaving my lips towards their ears. They became aware of the presence of unfamiliar looks and ran hand in hand.

I sat. It didn’t take long to appear an old train carrying old people. I stood there all day. I saw the train carrying that same carriage numerous times. The train travelled the same path during lots of hours, as if it could not change his route.

Then I got up and walked towards home. I may have found possible answers:

* The old people personify my ego on those days when I just want to disappear, on the days when even breathing is a heavy exercise, the days I scream I do not wish to live anymore.

* The tiles paint the urge need that floods me more times than I would want to, to go back and live in the past; it is the most unconscious desire to return to my childhood, when everything was as simple as two plus two equals four.

* The couple in love is a picture of my inner self on those days when I find myself in an unspeakable ecstasy. It is me with a huge desire to turn my days around and live the life of the ones that smile.

* The train was the picture that got me out of a state of inertia: that carriage is me, insisting on treading the same paths, disillusioning myself when I don’t find something new. But this carriage can still decide to change the route!

I understand now: I have to get rid of the strings that hold my search for the lost smile. I have to follow a different road from the one I step on…

It’s 8 o’clock on the dot. In less than 5 minutes I’ll listen to the door slamming. It will be her arriving home. It’s easy for me to trace her route on the flat just by paying attention to the sound of her footsteps. These are the indiscretions of modern buildings.

She will head first to the bedroom, where she will undress the role of a successful professional; then she will pass by the bathroom, where she will wash way the vicissitudes of daily life; in a while she will arrive in the kitchen to prepare the meal. She will still have time to stop for two minutes, no more than that, to select the voice that will date her during the evening.

Wise in her choice, she’s far away from imagining that there’s someone expectant downstairs, someone who longs for guessing the melody. If only she wrapped up herself -- and let me do it too -- in the density of Jeff Buckley or in the femininity of Kate Walsh. By then I’ll sigh in the evidence that nothing will be able to make herself raise her voice. Because he’s arriving soon...

Between the chords of the melody I’ll recognize the sound of the water draining through the sink, and I’ll pray for him to delay himself in a slack traffic light. She will focus on preparing one of those treats that everyone in the building knows by smell.

Devoted and confident, everyday she registers the usual, in profit of what had joined them. Maybe she still loves him. Maybe she’s still confused by the haziness and gloom with what one wraps up love. Maybe what one day led her to tell “until death do us part” had already dissipated from her memory. But even when she undresses the colour that names her an executive, she carries out another role in perfection: she’s a superb companion in a permanent contract.

I’ll listen to the sharp and assertive sound of the tires of his car braking on the asphalt even before 9 o’clock. The car door will be beaten with acuteness, and the always well polished shoes will rush upstairs. The same door that saw her entrance with serenity will now be inhospitable in his reception. Even the inanimate forms aren’t indifferent to his presence. A cry will echo between those walls, and the plea will define all the meanings and the signifiers of those two strangers, who were once a majestic plural.

Assiduous bystander of an inevitable break up, I scrutinize the real authority:

Is it worth getting both body and heart tired just for the respect to a notary paper, or is the manifesto “until death” a famous one voice expression?
